Management

We keep the management of both sheds very similar as birds are moved between them regularly; we feel that this helps the birds settle in very quickly.

The one difference that we do have is that George uses plastic nest boxes and Mike has the more traditional wooden boxes. To date we have not noticed any significant difference when breeding the birds.

Our feeding regime consists of Plain Canary, Red Millet and White Millet mixed together.

Greens are fed quite regularly with what ever greens are available from the kitchen, supplemented with wild seeds that we know are safe to feed the birds.

Fennel is another favourite with our birds and is fed quite regularly to the birds when the fennel has grown to full height and the seed heads have formed.

Softfood is given in the breeding season only and consists of EMP moist, rehydrated just carrot, seaweed and groats mixed together and fed in finger drawers.

The benefit of being in partnership with a Racing Pigeon fancier of Mike’s calibre is that he is always looking at ways to bring and keep the birds in condition whether that’s for breeding or for showing.

If there’s one thing that annoys Mike in the budgerigars it is that the birds seem to go out of condition all too regularly especially in the showing season, so it’s not unusual for Mike to drop off a bag of mixed seeds to see how the birds get on.

Mike’s philosophy is that he breeds racing pigeons to race not sit in his loft.
